Tips On Removing Fleas From Your Home

If you have indoor or outdoor pets, you are going to be at risk of getting fleas. The tiny insects feed on blood meals from humans and animals. They reproduce extremely quickly and can spread throughout your home in a matter of a few short days. Most people come into contact with fleas, when they spend the night in a home that is infested. Also, children that play outside in areas where stray dogs like to hang out may very well accidentally bring a couple of these pests home with them. Below, you will discover a few tips on removing fleas from your home.

A Flea Bath

One of the first things that you need to do is to give your cats and dogs a flea bath. There are hundreds of different types of shampoos that contain ingredients that are capable of eradicating fleas on contact. These products are very safe and effective, but if the infestation becomes severe, you will need to contact a pest control company. The technician will arrive to your home and spray insecticide throughout the inside and outside of your home. Many people tend to start with a flea bath and follow up with a pest exterminator visit, just to make sure that all of the pests are gone.

Instead of spending a lot of money on expensive flea shampoos, you should consider using Dawn dishwashing liquid. Lather the liquid into the dog or cat’s fur thoroughly and then rinse. You will immediately notice the dead fleas floating on top of the water, which is a positive sign that you are on the right track.

A Flea Fogger

If you are working on a limited financial budget, you should trying using a flea fogger instead of hiring an exterminator. Foggers are very easy to use and contain various ingredients that will eradicate fleas on the spot. These products will also eradicate larvae, but make sure the foggers contain an ingredient called an insect growth regulator. Look for methoprene or pyriproxyfen on the back of the container, where the ingredients are located.

Be sure to follow the directions on the back of the fogger canister. Once the fogger has been activated, you will need to stay away from the home for 2 to 3 hours. If you reenter the home before the time expires, you may alter the effectiveness rating. Allow the home to vent, by opening the windows, before allowing your pets and children to enter. Many of these products contain toxic ingredients that can damage the respiratory mucosa and cause an allergic reaction.
